DESCRIPTION The Diversity Awareness Committee is pleased to offer a three part seminar series on issues facing the transgender community. Seminar III Growing Up Transgender Coming out and transitioning are long, multi-dimensional processes that can have great impact on long term outcomes for people who are transgender. Sharing personal narratives is a tool for education and personal reflection. Discussion will center around personal narratives related to: coming out, barriers to care, support systems, and general transition related topics. Learning Objectives
    1. Identify potential risk and protective factors that impact the lives of people who are transgender at various stages of transition.
    2. Recognize the role social workers could play in connecting people who are transgender to appropriate, culturally sensitive resources.
    3. Identify barriers to people who are transgender accessing services offered by social workers and others in various settings (mental and physical healthcare, education, social services, et cetera).
    4. Discuss the potential challenges for the families of the individual transitioning.
Presenter Shaun Connors, BSW, is a queer transguy who has a soft spot for space, is fueled by black coffee, and seeks to make the world a better place by using social work practices and principles to educate in various settings. His experiences as an educator include teaching safer sex to LGBTQ+ folks, teenagers, and college students, educating about LGBTQ+ issues and allyship, and facilitating LGBTQ+ and transgender-specific panels in various settings. This program has been approved for one (1) Category I Continuing Education hours for licensure. NASW NH Authorization #3349. This seminar is free to any and all who wish to attend. There is limited space at the NASW NH office, but many spots available virtually via Zoom. You can either connect by video or just by conference call. If you are attending virtually via Zoom, you will receive the link/call in number several days before the seminar. Please look for it in your email. If you have any technical assistance needs, please let us know. If you are looking to receive CEUs, you must attend via video or in person (not conference call). If you are not an NASW member, and would like CEUs, there is a $25 fee. NASW Members receive the CEU for free. Questions? The Children’s Issues Committee’s goal is to identify the broader causes of social problems within the local and state community, and to actively work toward the elimination of these causes of dysfunction through advocating change of the social service system itself. Furthermore, we work collaboratively with other child advocacy groups to address issues, as well as work with the SLAC committee to improve social institutions, systems, legislation, and practice that impose hardship on children and families. New members are always welcome! Zoom info: NH NASW is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
