Three (3) Category I Clinical CEUs in Ethics approved by NASW NH Approval #3387
Working with children who are caught in the middle of parental conflict poses a unique set of challenges for a therapist. This workshop will utilize a practical approach in maintaining a neutral and safe place for children going through intense parental conflict. This workshop will explore how to structure the therapy; outline a few “do’s” and “don’t’s” and inform participants regarding legal and ethical issues such as: confidentiality, informed consent, Berg v. Berg, subpoenas, interactions with attorneys, and when to seek supervision or peer consultation.
Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss case examples. The NASW Code of Ethics will be an integral component of this workshop.
Participants will be able to:
- Discuss and give examples of the legal and ethical dilemmas of working with children in divorce/conflict situations
- Explain best practices for working with parents, attorneys, and other professionals
- Discuss best clinical practices to maintain neutrality for the child
- Recognize “red flags” that might affect treatment and/or legal/ethical risk to practitioners
- Reference the components of the NASW Code of Ethics that address these issues
